Amroth, Pembrokeshire

Ruby’s story…………….

We are on our annual holiday in Amroth, Pembrokeshire. I think that it could possibly be my favourite place that mum and dad have ever taken me to. This is our third time now and we always stay in the same cottage, Clam Cottage, please see my Dog Friendly Accommodation to find out more, or see their web site at https://clamcottage.co.uk/ .

Amroth is a great place for us pooches, you feel so welcome here. There are four pubs, and yes, we have visited them all, and all of them are dog friendly, so whether mum and dad are just having a drink or 3 (or 4) or having something to eat, I can go too. In fact every time we walk by the pubs, whatever time of day it is, I take my chance and try and drag them in. When I do, mum’s face lights up, but dad is a little bit more restrained then her, and unless he wants a breakfast, we have to wait until…… oh at least dinnertime before we can go in, spoilsport. What’s wrong with the man, we’re on our holidays after all……. I’ve heard mum mutter this too as we’re both dragged past.

Not only does Amroth have dog friendly pubs, it’s also got a dog friendly cafe, dog friendly shops and even a dog friendly ice cream shop that sells ice creams for pooches, what more could we want.

There are some fantastic walks around here, just over the road from where we are staying is the start of the Pembrokeshire Way Coastal Path, we’ve walked part of it you know. I bet you didn’t think that we’d do such a thing…… but it was only to the next little village along called Wisemans Bridge, because, guess what, that’s got a dog friendly pub too.

I do love all the dog friendliness in Amroth, but my very favourite thing is the beach. I’m not allowed on the whole of the beach, but the part that I am allowed on is great for running and swimming and there are always other pooches who you can chase or who’ll chase you, yesterday I did get a little over exuberant though and went to chase a little dog, but he wasn’t quite as agile as me (yes friends, I said agile) and he didn’t get out of the way in time. I crashed straight into him and knocked him off his feet….. the little fella squealed, probably the shock of being flattened by a 30 kilo Labrador. I got told off by mum and dad had to go after the lady to apologies for me squishing her dog, but all was well, the little fella was unhurt, just a bit winded I expect, personally I think he was just overacting……….

The only problem with the beach though friends, is you know from my previous blogs that I do like to have a good old snuffle about finding bits of cardboard, tissues and rubbish to eat. Well there is none of that here, this beach is super clean, there is no rubbish at all for me to eat. I do still usually find a bit of seaweed or a washed up jellyfish and eat that just to annoy mum, well its my holiday as well you know.

Mum’s story……………

We are on our annual holiday to Amroth, and to be honest Ruby has made my job pretty easy today. She has summed exactly what we think about Amroth and what a lovely little gem it is. This is our third time of coming here, and before we left home for this trip, we did say that perhaps we should find somewhere else for next year. But now that we are here, that thought has gone right out of the window. This really is the perfect place for a dog friendly holiday.

Our home for the week is Clam Cottage, see our Dog Friendly Accommodation recommendations for more information about this lovely little place or click on this link to see their website https://clamcottage.co.uk/

For a small village Amroth is very well served with 4 pubs, and yes we have visited them all. Well, its Ruby you see, you only have to mention the P word and she gets so excited, she has her only little dance that she does, we call it The Pub Dance, not very original I know, but it makes us laugh.

It does get a little bit embarrassing though, even when we are out on her morning walk first thing, we can’t walk past the pubs without her trying to drag us in……. personally I don’t mind….. we’re on holiday after all…… and it is 5 o’clock somewhere !!! but the other half is a little more restrained then me.

Literally over the road from the cottage is the start (or finish of The Pembrokeshire Way Coastal Path. It’s a lovely walk…… oh yes, we’ve done it you know. I like to tell people that, what I don’t add, is that it was just to the next village, Wisemans Bridge, which funnily enough has a dog friendly pub too, what a coincidence.

The very best part of Amroth is the beach. Dogs are not allowed on the whole of the beach, which is perfectly understandable. There are some none dog owners who go to Amroth too and the last thing that they want when they are enjoying a sunny afternoon at the beach having a picnic, is a 30 kilo Labrador helping themselves to their sausage rolls, and believe me that would happen in our case. Wherever we go, along with the 30 second risk assessment that I always carry out, I also carry out a picnic check too, and if there is anyone within 500 metres eating an egg sandwich or pork pie, we know someone who’ll sniff it out.

Ruby always has fun on the beach and usually finds another dog to chase or to chase her, but sometimes she gets a little bit over excited and not being the most coordinated of creatures, manages to send other dogs flying. Yesterday she went charging over to a little terrier type dog. The poor little thing didn’t know what had hit it, she went totally bowling into it and knocked it for six. She got a telling off, of course, and the other half had to go chasing after the poor owner to make sure her dog was OK. Thankfully there was no harm done.

The lovely think about Amroth beach is that the locals have regular litter pick and there are bags at the start of the beach that anyone walking on the beach can take and pick up any rubbish that they come across. This means that the beach is perfectly clean and for the owners of a greedy Labrador who will literally eat anything this is a god send. The trouble is that she has to find something, it just wouldn’t be a day out with Ruby if she didn’t eat something undesirable……… the seaweed I don’t mind…… but I do draw the line at jelly fish………..
