Psst…..

Ruby’s story………

Psst………. please can you help me. I’m trapped in the garden. They’ve shut the gate and I can’t get out. You see when I get out of the garden, I have so much fun. I run around in the neighbours gardens, and in one particular garden, there is always food to be had. It’s food that I don’t get at home. It’s cat food and I love it.

When I do manage to escape the garden, I want to spend as much time as possible with my little taste of freedom. So when they come to find me, they always know where I am, predictable I know, but I’m a Labrador after all, the temptation of food is just too much for me. But by the time they get there I’ve already cleared everything that there is to eat, so its just a game of chase that we have then. Me running, them chasing, it really is so much fun.

I never go too far away from them, that just wouldn’t be fair. So I stay close enough to them so they don’t get worried. In fact I stay almost in touching distance, but not quite. I lull them into thinking that they’re close enough to me to grab me. But I always manage to dart away, and then run off into someone else’s garden. I know that it provides much entertainment for the neighbours, little old me being chased round the village with my doting parents in hot pursuit.

After a while I get tired, well you try running with a belly full of cat food. So I give in and let them grab me, bless them they think that its them who’ve caught me, but I just give up the game ………. so if, you wouldn’t mind obliging and help me escape the garden, just for a short while, I can smell the cat food…………

Mum’s story……….

We always, always have to keep the garden gate locked, you see if Ruby gets out she runs amok round the neighbours gardens.

If she does get out we always know where to find her. She’s always in the garden with the cat food. She’s nothing if not predictable. Once she’s cleared all the bowls of cat food, off she goes again, trampling through the neighbours gardens with us in hot pursuit. We really must look a sight, I’m sure that we provide so much entertainment to the neighbours, as they see a Labrador, followed by the other half, followed by me puffing and panting at the back charging through their gardens, all that’s missing is the Benny Hill music….. you have to be of a certain age to know what I mean.

The most annoying thing is that she never actually goes too far, she’s always almost in touching distance, but as soon as you think that you can grab her, quick as you like, she darts away from you. Honestly, you could throttle her sometimes, or throttle whoever it was who left the gate open.

Anyway, when she feels that she’s had enough fun and we’ve suffered enough humiliation in front of the neighbours, she seems to tire, it’s probably all the cat food that she’s eaten. But whatever it is, great relief is felt all round when we manage to get her back on her lead and back to the garden.

So, if you are ever visiting could you do us a favour, please and do as the sign says and Shut the Gate…………..
