Ruby’s story…………………
Friends, I’ve been to the vets and I’m in great shape………. cancel the membership to Chub Club, this girl doesn’t need it.
It was only a quick visit this time thankfully, not a cone in sight. I got excited as usual in the waiting room, I just couldn’t wait for my turn. When the door was opened and I heard my name being shouted I jumped up and dashed in, dad must have been excited too, because he tried to race me in and ended up falling over in his rush and landing right at the feet of the vet. He always manages to embarrass me!
When we did get in there I got the usual fuss and a couple of treats and then the vet told dad to hold onto me while they gave me an injection, there was no need really, I didn’t feel a thing, and then that was it done.
Right let’s get out of here now, before they remember the scales. Come on lets go, we’ve taken up enough of the nice vet’s time, no time for weighing this time. But before I could get them out of the door, out came the scales, “come on Ruby get on” said the vet…. really do I have too ! I really didn’t want to get on them, but they did managed to coax me on, with guess what…. a treat……. ironic really !!
I did my best not to put my full weight down, I held my breath, tried standing on 3 legs, even tried standing on 2 but that was a mistake………
But what’s this, there is no head shaking from the vet, she’s actually smiling and telling mum and dad how well they’ve done keeping my weight down……… how well they’ve done !! really!! its my weight and its me who kept it down, thank you……..
So there you go friends no diet for me, I am in peak physical condition, but I knew that anyway…… come on lets go now… its dinnertime………..
Mum’s story……………..
Well we went to the vets yesterday and true to form Ruby’s was an absolute nightmare in the waiting room again. Every time someone came in or out of the consulting room she made a mad dash to get in. When it was finally our turn, and her name was called, she was scrabbling to get in as quickly as possible, she got under the other half’s feet and tripped him up, so the poor vet was greeted by a crazy slobbering Labrador and its owner flat on his face at her feet. You’d have thought that after all these years we’d have learnt to cope with the embarrassment of having an out of control Labrador, but no, the burning shame of having all the other dog owners in the waiting room who all had perfectly well behaved pooches glaring and tutting at you and your unruly pooch, just doesn’t get any easier.
Anyway once in the room after she’d had the usual fuss and treat, she was given her injections and by this time she is so hyped up, she doesn’t even notice.
Then its the time that we all dread, it was as if Ruby knew she was about to suffer the shame of a public weigh in. She was suddenly extremely keen to get out of that room and away from the scales. But no chance of that, the scales were out and we were all trying to wrestle her on to them, in the end the only thing that worked was to coax her on with a treat….. how ironic !
But do you know what, there was no need to worry, the vet was pleased with her weight and even congratulated us on keeping her at the same weight as last time, to say we were shocked was an understatement, seeing as what this girl eats in a day. But the scales don’t lie, we’d done it, there was something that we were actually in control of, I didn’t feel like a failure after all.
She’s in peak physical condition…… come on then lets go…….. its her dinnertime soon, and she may get a little extra scoop today………..
