We visited this lovely pub when we were staying in a self catering cottage in Sandhead. The pub is right in the middle of the village and overlooks the beach and the sea. When we stayed it was at the end of February 2018, and if you don’t remember that time, it was when the Beast from the East hit the country. Although, however, bad it was everywhere else, Sandhead escaped the beast. Oh my gosh though, it was cold and it was windy, you could hardly keep your feet on the beach. But once you did, and you made it to Tigh Na Mara, it was such a welcome relief. From the freezing cold wind of the beach, the first thing that immediately hit you when you walked in the door, was the lovely huge open fire, and the lovely welcome you received from the host. The pub is very traditional and very welcoming and dogs are welcome in the bar area, which has a tiled floor so even if the pooches are are little wet from beach, its fine. The pub itself is the only one in the village, so is used by locals and visitors alike, but being a visitor you do not feel that you are intruding, all the staff and the locals make everyone feel very welcome. It was very difficult to leave and go back out into the howling gale. Even though we were only staying next door.
