The First Day

Ruby’s story………

Well they turned up on a Saturday morning armed with a blanket and a little toy mouse lady made from rope, really, did they honestly think that mouse lady was going to stand up to my chewing. I recognised them as they were here 3 weeks ago. None of my other brothers and sisters were that bothered when they turned up then, but me being nosy and always on the hunt for something to eat, I went over to have a look at them just in case they did have any food on them, which they didn’t.

Anyway, back to Saturday morning, The blanket was to rub on my doggy mummy so that I could still smell her when I got to their house, this was so I wouldn’t be as scared – don’t tell them, but I’m glad they did really, because when I woke up in the middle of the night the smell of my doggy mummy did make me feel better.

So then it was time to leave my doggy mummy. I tried to be brave, but I did have a little cry, well until the car got to the end of the street, and then all the excitement of the day got too much for me and I swiftly fell asleep. In that single moment I noticed one thing……. that my new mummy had a very comfortable lap, lots of padding.

When I next woke I was in a strange place, I didn’t recognise anything at all, so I did get a little bit frightened….. well quite frightened actually, so much so that I had a little wee on the floor, sorry I couldn’t help myself. I thought that the best thing to do was to go and stand in the corner with my nose to the wall…… I couldn’t think what else to do really. I didn’t want to be here and I wanted to go home to my doggy mummy, But wait a minute……….. hold on….., hang on….., what’s that they’ve got……., is that for me…….., it must be for me…… its food!!!!

Eating here is a whole new experience, everything in the bowl is for me. I don’t have to fight my brothers and sisters for it, and new mummy is very generous with her portions. Hold on……, what’s that you say new daddy…., she’s given me too much……., no, no she hasn’t……., don’t listen new mummy what you’ve given me is just fine…., keep it coming.

Next to come, was a bit of a shock. I was put in a sink and given a bath with some funny smelling shampoo. I don’t know why really I thought that my puppy smell was quite nice.., quite fragrant actually. Well the bath wasn’t enjoyable at all and I cried, again…… OK, don’t judge, these are whole new experiences for me. Little did I know that water, and it doesn’t even have to be clean water, would very quickly become one of my favourite things in life.

Well, after a long day and with a tummy full of food, I think its about time I had another sleep. I don’t think it will be very long before I show these two whose in charge, I think that this going to be easy………..

Mummy’s story………….

Well the day has finally dawned when we are to collect our new puppy. We first met her 3 weeks ago when we decided that she was the one for us. Bless her when we went to look at the puppies for the first time, she waddled over to us and was snuffling around our pockets. “I think that she is one”, we both said, after all it looks like she’s chosen us.

Anyway back to the Saturday morning, We arrived at the house armed with a new baby blanket and a sweet little mouse lady toy made out of rope for her to play with…., I know that she’ll love it. The blanket was to rub on her doggy mum and we would put it in her bed so that it would help her to settle.

I must say our nerves were jangling…, what had we taken on…., were we responsible enough to take care of this sweet little thing.

As soon as we drove away in the car she started crying…, oh no, this is breaking my heart, we’re taking her away from her real mummy. But we hadn’t even got off the end of the street, and she was flat on her back, legs in the air, snoring away on my lap, and in that single moment I fell totally and utterly in love with this little bundle of joy.

She didn’t wake again until we got home and I put her down on the kitchen floor, where she swiftly had a wee, and the other half, who is a bit of a clean freak, even more swiftly got the mop out, “we are going to have to get used to this” I said, “this is only the start”.

After the wee she went for a little explore, Bless her, she was going to see what there was in the corner, “go on Ruby have a good look round this is your new home now”.

Next was to give her some food, The breeder had given us a huge sack of food that the puppies had been fed on, The sack was nearly as big as me, this is going to last her all year. Deciding how much to give her was hard, she hadn’t been fed yet today, so I wanted to give her a big enough portion, after all she was a growing puppy. But according to the other half I’d given her more than double what the instructions on the sack told us. Oh well, I’ll get it right next time, and she must have been hungry, bless her, the speed she ate it was ridiculous, the poor little mite must have been starving. We soon realised that this was the speed that everything was consumed.

Next was to give her a little bath in the sink because she had that strong puppy smell. So we bought some lovely smelling herbal shampoo, and gave her a lovely little bath, She didn’t seem to enjoy it very much though, as she did have a little cry, Little did we know that water, however dirty it was, would soon become one of her favourite things in life.

Bless her after her food and bath, she settled down for a little sleep. I think that we’ve done quite well really, we’ve survived day one. I think that this is going to be easy………..
