Early Mornings

Ruby’s story…………

I was up and awake early this morning, even before the sun came up, as soon as I heard the first tweet of a bird, up I was, and because I was up, I wanted everyone up. I usually wake them by going to the bottom of the stairs and giving them a little gruff, but this didn’t wake them this morning, they either didn’t hear me, or they were ignoring me. So that was that, I gave them it with both barrels “get up you lazy so n so’s, its 5.30am on a Saturday morning”. Saturdays are not for lie-in’s after all, Saturday’s are for getting up and about, places to go, people to see, things to be done……… besides this girl has needs.

I never had been one for going to the loo in the garden, it just wasn’t right, I usually didn’t go within a 1 mile radius of home, and this morning was no different. Off we went me, trotting on, mum lagging behind still wiping the sleep from her eyes.

Well, this morning I just couldn’t find the right spot to go, backwards and forwards I was, this way and that, just looking for the right spot…. it must be here somewhere, I’ll find it……. ah, this is it, I think I’ve found it, right let me just get settled here, oh no, hold on what’s that, I’ve got a sniff of something….. oh no, spoilt it, the moments gone now, I’m going to have to find somewhere else now. So off we went again, backwards and forwards, up and down, round and round. I could feel mum getting madder and madder on the other end of the lead…… but I think that she’s mad because she doesn’t get a choice where she goes……..

After about another half an hour, there is a breakthrough, I think I’ve got it, I think I’ve got the right spot, yes, this is it, this is the right spot, right off we go……….. this is bliss……. Right, that’s that done mum, come on lets, get home for breakfast.

Back at home with a full tummy after breakfast and after such an early start, I think it might be time for a little snooze….. wake me up at lunchtime mummy…. oh and try and keep the noise down, it is only 8.00am on a Saturday morning…….

Mummy’s story…………………………..

Ever since we’d had Ruby we’d decided that we would take it in turns to get up with her on a weekend. My day was Saturday and the other half got up with her on Sunday morning, that way at least we both still managed to have one lie-in a week.

Well this morning was Saturday so, when I heard her little gruff at the bottom of the stairs, I thought, I’ll just give her a minute, she might settle down. But oh no, there was no settling down to be had, the little gruff turned into a bigger bark, and the bigger bark turned into her shouting at the top of her voice. I looked at the clock and it was 5.30am, it was still the middle of the night. But there was no shutting her up, so up I got.

Never, in all the time that we had had Ruby, did she ever use the garden as her toilet, for some reason she just wouldn’t, if you put her out there, she just stood at the gate and barked until you took her out, and usually a little wee break turned into a mile long walk there and back.

This morning was no different, off we went, her trotting on ahead, me lagging behind still wiping the sleep out of my eyes. Well the speed she set off, you would think that she was bursting to go, but if she was, she was very good at holding it in, because this morning she was literally backwards and forwards, round and round, up and down, looking for somewhere to go. Just as I thought we’d cracked it and that she’d found the right spot, something caught her attention and that was that, the moment was gone and off we went again. This was ridiculous we’d been out nearly half an hour now, it was 6.00am and she still couldn’t find anywhere to go, I was getting madder and madder, why does it matter where you go, just have a wee and let’s go………… and then hooray, she’d finally found the right spot, she squatted down………. After that, she spun on her heels and headed for home.

Once at home I gave her her breakfast, which she cleared in 30 seconds flat, and I had not even had a chance to make myself a cup of tea, when the little devil was back in her basket and snoring away……. it was 8.00am on a Saturday morning after all……
