Ruby’s story……………….
They took me for a day out today to a nearby racecourse to have a run around the course. I had so much fun. I’ve been there before so as soon as we turned into the drive for the car park, I knew where we were and was jumping about in the back of car dying to get out. When the car was parked they opened the back door and out I ran onto the field. I was so excited, I just spent the first 5 minutes running round in circles and then off we went to do a lap of the course.
Its been a lovely bank holiday weekend so there must have been loads of people there yesterday having picnics, and do you know what, I couldn’t believe my luck, it just seemed that they’d all left something behind just for me to eat. Not food, oh know there was no food left behind just bits of tissues, empty cardboard cups from a well know fast food restaurant and plastic bottles, all of my favourite things, and I was just as happy to eat these. I’ve always had a taste for wet cardboard, I don’t know why, but if I see some in the side of the road or a cardboard cup from a well known fast food restaurant that someone has left behind then I can’t resist ripping a bit off and eating it……. it drives mum mad for some reason.
Anyway, we must only have been there 10 minutes and I’d already eaten six tissues and managed to rip up two cardboard cups from a well known fast food restaurant, before they grabbed me and put me back on my lead……. spoilsports, don’t they know that I’m carrying out a public duty, litter picking.
After a while they let me off my lead again, but there was nothing around here for me to eat, so I just entertained myself by chasing a few birds and at one point I joined in a game of football with a little boy and his dad, I was great, every time they kicked the ball I managed to get to it first, they mustn’t have liked me being better at football than them because after a while of me winning the ball all the time, the dad picked up the ball and the boy and left. That’s what’s wrong with people nowadays, no competitive spirit.
As I said I’ve been here before so I do remember that there is water running down the middle of the field along a little narrow channel, so off I went to find it, imagine me shock when I got there and there was no water in it. Well that spoilt my fun, but after a while I got a little smell and knew that I could smell a little bit of water, I just had to find it, and before long I did, and in I jumped, only when I actually got in there it wasn’t water at all it was just mud, oh well its better than nothing, I’m in here now I might as well have a run through it………..
Anyway friends as you can probably tell, I’ve had a great day today and I can’t wait to do it all again soon…………… I just can’t understand why they had all the windows open in the car on the way home………
Mum’s story……………………
It’s the last day of my Easter holiday before I go back to work, so we thought that we’d have a family day out at a local racecourse, there wasn’t any racing on we just like to take Ruby to have a run round the course, because its a huge open field and she can’t usually get up to too much trouble.
It all started well, she was good in the car until we actually turned into the drive of the racecourse to park the car, and I’m not sure how, but it’s as if she knew where she was. We have brought her there before, but surely she can’t remember it. Anyway, she was leaping around going crackers in the back of the car dying to get out, so we just parked up and opened the back door and let her jump out. Bless her she was so excited, she spent the first 5 minutes just running round in circle, but then as we set off for a walk round, that’s when the trouble began.
Its been a lovely bank holiday weekend and its obviously brought everyone out to have a picnic, lovely you might think, but when people leave all the rubbish behind it really is so inconsiderate. Not only does it look a mess, its just temptation for greedy Labradors who will literally eat anything. Ruby’s has always had an unhealthy fascination with eating wet cardboard, it drives me mad, particularly cardboard cups from a well known fast food restaurant that inconsiderate people just throw out of their car windows onto the side of the road.
We had literally been here 10 minutes and she had already eaten six paper tissues that someone had dropped and ripped up and two cardboard cups from a well known fast food restaurant. “Right that’s it, get her back on her lead, she just can’t be trusted”.
After a while when we’d got to the bottom end of the racecourse, obviously, too far for picnickers to walk, we let her off again because it seemed pretty clear, all there was down there was a little boy playing football with his dad. I think that I’ve told you before, she has never had any interest in chasing balls, throw one in a field for her and she literally walks past it, and you end up retrieving it yourself. But what is it with this girl, there is some inbred pain in the backside gene that she seems to have, because today, all she wanted to do, apart from eat other peoples rubbish was to chase a football. The poor little kid, was petrified every time he went for his ball, he was confronted by an overexcited Labrador waiting to pounce (not that she would do any harm, she doesn’t have an aggressive bone in her body) she literally chased every ball that was kicked. After a while, the dad scooped up his kid and the ball and they were off….. someone’s else’s afternoon ruined.
After the football, came the water, as I said she’s been here before so she knows exactly where the water is, but today, luckily the little ditch that runs through the middle of the course was empty, thank goodness for small mercy’s, or so we thought, a little further down, she managed to find the only bit of water on the whole course and in she went, but, it didn’t turn out to be water, no, she was running head first through thick dirty mud………… she was absolutely filthy and stinking…………….. so on the way home all the windows were open in the car because she literally stunk it out.
So there it is friends, another lovely day out turns into another chapter in the unruly Labrador story…… roll on work tomorrow…………
